Championship Canadian Grand Prix Race Report Michael Schumacher wins the Canadian Grand Prix by 0.174 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella. Mika Hakkinen, Jos Verstappen and Jarno Trulli make the top 6. Michael Schumacher becomes the first driver to win from Pole position in 13 attempts. Michael Schumacher only had to worry about David Coulthard for a few laps until David was called in for a stop and go penalty due to having McLaren mechanics on the grid past the allowed time before the warmup lap. Both had already created a 20 second cushion to 3rd place Jacques Villeneuve who drove a brilliant race until 4 laps from the end when he made a mistake trying to pass David Coulthard and crashed into Ralf Schumacher. Jacques was frustrated when made his first pit stop and put on slicks where he should have put on wets as it had just started to rain. Giancarlo Fisichella benefited from a late stop strategy that he only needed to pit once and hence finishing ahead of all those who had to stop twice except for the 2 Ferrari's. Jos Verstappen drove a brilliant race and managed to pass several cars on the track in the wet and finished in 5th place. Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard make a good start but it is Jacques Villeneuve who made another blinding start from 6th to 3rd. Eddie Irvine does not get off the starting line and is pushed to the side. He rejoins 2 laps down. Pedro de la Rosa believed to be on low fuel overtakes Frentzen for 6th Race order after 1st lap: Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen and Pedro de la Rosa. Race order after 10th lap: Michael Schumacher ahead of David Coulthard by 0.9 seconds followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen and Pedro de la Rosa. David Coulthard gets a 10 second stop go penalty due to mechanics staying on the track for too long before the warmup lap. Johnny Herbert retires with gearbox problems. Race order after 15 laps: Michael Schumacher ahead of Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen, Pedro de la Rosa and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Pedro de la Rosa pits. Race order after 20 laps: Michael Schumacher ahead of Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli. Light rain starts falling for a short time. David Coulthard spins and recovers while Barrichello finally manages to pass Villeneuve. Race order after 25 laps: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello, Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello trade fastest laps. Jarno Trulli passes his teammate Heinz Harald Frentzen. Race order after 30 laps: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello, Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Michael Schumacher pits and rejoins, Heinz Harald Frentzen retires. Mika Hakkinen passes Jacques Villeneuve. Nick Heidfeld retires. Race order after 35 laps: Rubens Barrichello ahead of Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta. Jarno Trulli pits. Alesi retires. Race order after 65 laps: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella. Mika Hakkinen, Jos Verstappen and Jarno Trulli. David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz touch both going off and recovering although David Coulthard manages to pass. Michael Schumacher slows and Rubens Barrichello catches him. Final order: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello by 0.174 seconds and Giancarlo Fisichella. Mika Hakkinen, Jos Verstappen and Jarno Trulli make the top 6. |
