Results 4-June: At the winners press conference, David Coulthard achieves his personal Grand Slam by winning the 4 races he wants most. The Belgian (his favourite GP), the British (his home GP), the Italian (nothing like an Italian crowd for F1) and the Monaco GP as it is one of the most technical and challenging circuits on the calendar. He did admit that he benefited from the failures of the cars in front of him but that is Monaco and that he has had his fair share of failures here so he is more than happy to take this win. When asked about gaining the upper hand within the team now that he is ahead of Mika Hakkinen in the drivers championship, he indicated that he is getting better and with that he expects the team to supports him. As for his chances in Canada, he indicated that he went out twice while leading the race so hopefully his luck will change this time. Rubens Barrichello indicated that they made a bad decision in qualifying and that has also affected his start. He was also unfortunate when both himself and Frentzen went into the pits tougher as he was confident that if he stayed out for another lap he would have passed him. Towards the end of the race he was asked to slow down and run at lower revs as their was a problem with his car and that is when Giancarlo Fisichella was catching him. Giancarlo Fisichella was very pleased with a podium finish as he didn't expect to finish this high. He was happy with the setup of the car but during the race he suffered a puncture and had to come into the pits 10 laps ahead of schedule which lost him some time. 4-June: David Coulthard wins the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella, Eddie Irvine, Mika Salo and Mika Hakkinen make the top 6. Timed Results 4-June: Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest time during the warmup session for the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of teammate Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher. David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli and Mika Hakkinen make the top 6. All the drivers go out at the start of the session with Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta the first to set timed laps. With 10 minutes into the session, 11 drivers have set times with Jos Verstappen ahead of Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella. Johnny Herbert crashes into the tyre barrier. 15 minutes into the session and it is Mika Hakkinen just 0.002 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Jean Alesi is 3rd. David Coulthard and Pedro de la Rosa have yet to set a time. 10 minutes to go in this 30 minute session and it is Mika Hakkinen ahead of Michael Schumacher by almost a second. Heinz Harald Frentzen is 3rd. David Coulthard finally clocks a competitive time but is down in 21st position while Pedro de la Rosa just starts his first timed lap. With just 5 minutes to go David Coulthard puts in a stunning lap and ends up 2nd fastest only 0.002 seconds behind Hakkinen. Moments later Ralf Schumacher goes fastest !. The final 2 minutes had most of the cars back on track and Rubens Barrichello goes fastest ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher. David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli and Mika Hakkinen make the top 6. Pedro de la Rosa crashes on his last lap, his car is badly damaged but he is fine ... Timed Results. 3-June: No driver has won from pole this year, in fact the last time a driver won from pole position was at the Hungarian grand prix and that was 12 races ago. Despite that, Michael Schumacher has dismissed it as only a statistic that will get broken sooner or later. Michael Schumacher also pointed out that he is not attempting to replace Senna as the King of Monaco and indicated that we will never know what he would have done. Senna won the Monaco grand prix a record 6 times with 5 of them in a row between 1989 and 1993. Michael Schumacher has won 4 times so far with only 2 in a row. Mika Hakkinen has indicated his frustration with traffic and yellow flags during qualifying. Up until the last few minutes of the session, every time he went out for a fast lap, he was forced to abort by slower traffic and yellow flags. With only 6 minutes from the end of the session he was in 17th position and he had only 1 run left to be able to improve and he finally managed to get up to 5th position. Jean Alesi was pleased with his performance by securing a 7th place on the grid despite having problems during the session which forced him to take the spare car after his race car suffered from alternator problems. This is the first time this season that he has qualified in the top 10. In fact Jean Alesi has not managed to qualify higher than 15th this season. This is a dramatic improvement despite the news this weekend that Prost's technical director Alan Jenkins has left the team. Jacques Villeneuve only managed to qualify way back in 17th position but considering that his Honda engine blew up on his first outlap during qualifying and lost the chance to get a final run after being called for a weight check the result is not as bad as it looks. Villeneuve has indicated that they will be taking some risks from this position and you never know what could happen ! 3-June: At the post qualifying press conference, Michael Schumacher described the situation after qualifying as perfect with Jarno Trulli next to him and Mika Hakkinen in 5th place. He did say though that it is a long race and it will be very tough. Michael Schumacher also indicated that on his first 2 runs he brushed the wall and the car needed a bit of a repaint !!. On his best ever qualifying, Jarno Trulli didn't expect to be on the front row especially given that his practice sessions on Thursday were badly affected by front suspension problems. His times got better today but he still only expected a top 6 position so he is very happy to be on the front row. As for the traffic, he indicated that he lost 2 laps to slow traffic and especially his last lap he lost due to a slow McLaren. David Coulthard indicated that improved times during the session are mainly due to the driver finding the limit and being on a clear lap with a perfectly setup car. When asked about why McLaren have opted for the harder compound tyre which does not perform as well as the softer compound in qualifying, he answered by saying that the race is were the points are and that McLaren have made the decision based on what they feel would best suite their strategy. Timed Results. 2-June: As he did last year, Michael Schumacher has returned to Fiorano to perform a shakedown test of the 4th Ferrari to be used as a spare at the Monaco Grand Prix. SAP, one of the worlds largest software companies have reached an agreement with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to become the title sponsor for the US Grand Prix which takes place on the 24th of September. It is worth noting that all the reserve seat tickets have been sold and it is expected that the race day capacity will be an all time record for a Formula 1 race. Toyota have announced that they hope to have their Formula 1 car ready for testing early next year around February or March. The 2001 season will be used for testing and development and racing will only start in 2002. 1-June: At the Thursday press conference for the Monaco Grand Prix, Pedro Diniz described how Sauber started with a competitive package but were faced with a lot of reliability problems and had to sort out the wings problem they had in Brazil which forced them to pull out of the race. He also believes that they have to do a lot of work in the aerodynamics area as that is the weakest area on the car. Pedro Diniz described his time at Sauber with Alesi as more fun than this year as it was a challenge for him to do the same time as Alesi however Salo is also a quick driver and a challenge as well. Jean Alesi is hoping to get points as soon as possible and hopefully that starts at Monaco. He indicated that Prost were optimistic about this season but due to lack of testing they didn't know were they were going. Pedro de la Rosa emphasises that while it is good to score your first point you have to keep scoring them. The point he scored at the Nurburgring was well deserved especially that none of the drivers in front of him went off the track. He also believes that there is still more to come from the car as they have not reached the maximum yet. Adrian Newey described how the car evolves during a single season and how you finish the season with a car that is not very close in specification to the one you started with. When asked about the reliability problems that hit McLaren at the beginning of the season, he believes they have overcome these problems and hopes that they won't have other problems waiting for them. Neil Ressler described how big of a challenge it is to take overall control of Jaguar racing and that he has to concentrate on it all the time. He added that he has delegated all his other responsibilities to others in America. When asked about the future of Johnny Herbert with the team, he basically said that it is in the hands of Johnny and he and the team are eager to see him improve his qualifying performance. It appears that Jaguar are giving Herbert a last chance. When asked about the future with Alexander Wurz with Benetton, Flavio Briatore answered by saying that he honestly does not know and that he has no idea if Benetton will get rid of him or not. This does not sound positive for the Austrian. When asked about the changes he plans to introduce at Benetton, he believes that the team has a good base and will only change what he thinks is necessary although he will not be telling the press about his plans. As for signing Jacques Villeneuve in 2001, Flavio indicated that everyone wants a top driver like Jacques because you need a top driver to win races. However with the current situation at Benetton, he believes that Villeneuve deserves a better team. This statement has squashed the rumors indicating that Jacques Villeneuve has already signed for Benetton next year. 1-June: In the dying minutes of the second practice session on Thursday, Mika Hakkinen goes fastest ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard ... Timed Results. 31-May: At the Wednesday press conference for the Monaco Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher indicates that getting the best lap times at Monaco is a very high challenge and that mistakes usually cause accidents rather than ending up in a gravel trap. He also believes that testing at Fiorano provides the ideal environment for them as it is at the factory and is a tight circuit with a couple of tight corners like Monaco. When asked if he will test at Fiorano on Friday as he did last year, he explained by saying that it is Ross Brawn who tells us. Ross Brawn agrees indicating they will test. Mika Hakkinen believes the most important thing about this race is to stay focused, calm and consistent. Avoiding mistakes also speeds up the development of the car. Regarding McLaren's preparations, Mika indicated that they have tested at Silverstone although it was a bit difficult because of the weather conditions. He believes McLaren could be better prepared but they have a strong package and could do a very good job. Ross Brawn indicated that all teams here run the maximum downforce they can run almost regardless of efficiency and run to the limit in terms of wings. He expects the season to be closely fought with McLaren and it will have ups and downs for the team. He believes that this is the best car Ferrari have produced since he and Michael moved to Ferrari. He also indicated that they are quietly confident about the season without being complacent. As for Rubens strategy at the Nurburgring, he admitted that they have screwed up by staying out too long on dry tyres and the strategy was never intended to spoil Mika Hakkinen's race. He indicated that it was a speculative strategy that didn't work, but they had little to lose. Giancarlo Fisichella was very glad to have come out of the big accident at Valencia without injuries and is very confident about Saturday and Sunday. He is targeting a podium finish as he has done well here in the last 3 years. He also believes that the car is getting better. He indicated that it was unfortunate that he had the accident at Valencia which prevented him from testing any further. He also believes that although the Valencia track is tight, technical and close in layout to Monaco, it is still very different. Gerhard Berger remembers his first experience at Monaco when he was out at the very first corner. He didn't have any good feelings at that time. He indicated that Monaco is not an easy race to be doing for the first time but it could be a good place for young talent to show their potential. He also indicated that Monaco is a circuit that is impossible to simulate given the slippery surface it has. He expects McLaren and Ferrari to set the pace and hopes that Williams will be right behind them. As for the current development on the BMW engine, he indicated that even though they are getting close to half season, they are still concentrating on reliability but in the second half of the season they will move a step forward on the performance side. He added that overall it has been a fantastic season so far especially for Ralf Schumacher who seems to be able to get the maximum out of the package. 31-May: "It is just not fast enough !" is the title of the 14th issue from the Diagnosis and Prognosis Series for the 2000 season. 29-May: Now that Juan Pablo Montoya has won the Indianapolis 500 and became the first rookie to win the event in 34 years, he is all set to move to Formula 1. While Williams have not made a decision yet, Patrick Head has made it clear that if they do sign Montoya to drive for them in 2001, Jenson Button will still drive in Formula 1 with another team. Jenson Button also indicated that he wants to stay in Formula 1 even if he has to drive for another team. Johnny Herbert has indicated that he realises that this could be his last season in Formula 1 and following the European Grand Prix he indicated that he will do whatever his Jaguar team will ask him to do. It appears that Johnny Herbert is now preparing himself for a move to CART. He was recently quoted as saying "I'm not scared of ovals. I am realistic about my prospects and unless things improve, it looks like being my last season in Formula 1." 28-May: Can Michael Schumacher continue his dream run at Monaco or will McLaren fight back ?
