Michael Schumacher
pushes when it matters the most and wins at Canada despite suffering some
brake problems. The 2 Williams manage 2nd and 3rd despite being stronger than
the Ferrari while the amazing Fernando Alonso in the Renault manages to catch
up with the leaders.
A
few of the highlights:
Knowing the he
had some brake problems and his tyres were inferior to the Michelins,
Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari team once again played a brilliant
strategy and managed to get ahead of Ralf Schumacher when it mattered
most.
Given that
Michael and Ralf were on very similar fuel loads and given that the
Williams was apparently stronger, why couldn't Ralf stay in front, or at
least recover at the second pit stop ?
Juan Pablo
Montoya may have managed to stay in front of Michael during the pit stops
but he should concentrate first on not spinning!.
Fernando
Alonso had a lot more fuel than Michael or the two Williams yet he
qualified only a thousandth of a second behind Michael. That was brilliant
and so was his 4th place finish being so close to the leaders driving a
considerably underpowered car.
However given the above, do you think the Renault team miscalculated the
amount of fuel he should have in the first stint as judging by the amount
of fuel he had, he may have challenged for pole if he was as light as
either of the Williams.
Rubens
Barrichello again struggles, this time though after nudging Alonso on the
first lap and damaging his front wing. He did well though to recover into
5th.
Kimi Raikkonen
threw away his lead in the championship thanks to yet another 'over the
limit' moment in qualifying. At least this time he recovered superbly
despite losing a tyre to finish 6th.
Mark Webber
did a superb job of getting into 7th place and being the best of the rest
at one of the toughest tracks on the calendar. It was also good to see a
Jaguar being reliable.
Hard luck to
Cristiano da Matta who managed to get ahead of his team-mate Olivier Panis
until he retired a few laps from the end. At least it was for the benifit
of Panis who for once luck turned to him rather than away from him.
Jordan, BAR,
Sauber all with double DNF's. That is why this circuit is considered a
'car breaker'..

The Canadian circuit puts considerable stress on the machine; that's a
"given." But it's only a "car breaker" in so far as some
drivers are more unkind to their equipment than others. That Fernando and Kimi
finished well, in spite of less than ideal rides or positions simply shows
that good drivers are BOTH fast AND kind to their equipment.
It's not an accident that M.S. is a five time world champion, though those who
favor speed over winning consistently complain about his "tactics"
and attribute his winning to everything but his driving. If, on the other
hand, Michael's tires & brakes were problematic rather than optimal, one
must assume the same for Rubens. And if Rubens were as good as Michael it's
hard not to think he wouldn't have been in Ralph's place --or at least
challenging for it. He certainly had as much help from the pits as
Michael.
Ralph, once again, drove a fine race and should be congratulated for rescuing
Sir Frank's dreams from the clutches of the Merc/Mac folks! But I wouldn't go
so far as to say that BMW/Williams is the best package on the circuit; I don't
care how many poles they get. The points that matter are awarded on Sunday and
it's hard to believe that anyone in the field wouldn't JUMP at the opportunity
to drive Rubens (or Michael's) machine. And that includes Ralph, Juan,
Fernando, Kimi, David, & Olivier. Heck, even Jacques would probably take a
Ferrari if offered. But I wouldn't bet on it.
Nurburgring? I expect a drag race between Williams & Ferrari. Will Ron
bring on the new Mac? I'm beginning to wonder if we'll EVER see it - Jim W

Canada is still a car breaker, thank god that hasn't changed. You don't win
Canada you finish it first and then you've won. The best racing I've seen for
a long time. Michael, Juan and Allonso all had fantastic drives but each for
different reasons and the ice man Kimi will have better days ahead.
It took a while but thank fook that Williams and Michelin have stepped up to
the plate. I have been telling the wife for years that F1 is strange without
the Williams cars being strong and that Honda used to make an ENGINE, she
thought I was mad. Great stuff - Cooky - Australia
It is amazing how Michael managed to win the race despite his problems or
perhaps it is amazing how Ralf cannot win despite starting from pole and
despite having a stronger package.
I reckon Alonso may have challenged for the win had he put less fuel in
that car. They seem to have got their sums wrong this time as usually they go
out lighter not heavier.
In any case Alonso was impressive and he will be a future champ more so than
Montoya or Raikkonen.
There are drivers (Ralf, Rubens, David, Jarno) today that don't
deserve to be with top teams and I hope we see a big reshuffle next season - Graham
