Switching focus to the back of the grid ...

For the last few years, Minardi was viewed as the team that will always line-up at the back. Looking at the statistics though, they were officially classified last by the FIA once in the last 3 seasons. (In 2001 it was Minardi while in 2000 it was Prost and in 1999 it was BAR).

This year Minardi look stronger than ever and with Mark Webber driving for them they appear to be well positioned to score more points this season when and if the opportunity arises.
Toyota were expected to struggle in the early part of the season however the strong form they've showed in Melbourne indicates they'll be mid-field runners very soon.
Jaguar somehow (like Minardi) managed to score points in Australia but the fact is that both their cars qualified behind Webber's Minardi.
Arrows show good speed but will they get reliable ?
Other candidates ?

What others are saying:

Jaguar for sure. They bought an existing, up and coming team and have turned it into the running joke of the paddock. Every time I see people pouncing around in their merchandise I have a laugh!
Stupid wannabe fans wouldn't know shite' from clay. . . Then again neither would Jaguars' aero guy, HA!! - Scott B - Australia

I think BAR will get the wooden spoon - Andrew P - Australia

While I agree with Jeff that the annihilation of the field at the first corner made the Melbourne result atypical the reality is that teams which otherwise would not have picked up points did so. These points (and particularly Minardi's two) almost guarantee them a position further up the table than they would otherwise have enjoyed. As the season progresses the top three teams will assert themselves and gain reliability. That means that the pickings will become increasingly slim for the points that they (Ferrari, Williams, McLaren) don't pick up. It would be reasonable to assume that at best only 3 points per race will go to 'the rest'. With a clearly defined stratification of a second tier of teams that means that Arrow's (Frentzen notwithstanding) and perhaps even Toyota will not be likely to see another points finish this season. With Sauber and Jordan likely to vacuum up the lions share of the few points to be had even BAR and Renault may not get a points finish in 2002.
If a resolution is reached that allows the Prost cars to race this season then their chances of becoming wooden spooner's probably equals MS's chances of getting another points finish in 2002.
I see the tail end looking like: 7: Renault 8: BAR 9: Minardi (courtesy of their existing 2 points) 10: Toyota 11: Arrows 12: Prost (if applicable) - Geoff H - Australia

Thanks Geoff for your input. It is an interesting prediction however you did seem to have left out Jaguar!. They would certainly be a candidate methinks!!
Geoff: I quite deliberately left Jaguar off the tail enders - I do not expect that they will score any more points this season, but I think their 3 points for Melbourne will push them above those nominated (none of whom I see getting more than 2 for the season!) and into 6th place behind Jordan (5th) and Sauber (4th).
Ed:  I see, that makes sense. I actually forgot that they have scored 3 points. (Which I am still surprised by !!)
Geoff: We are both surprised by that! - but I bet EI is even more surprised

I heard that Tom Walkinshaw bought the Prost GP team. If they compete this season, they' ll surely take the wooden spoon - Sorin - Romania

I don't think too many conclusions can be drawn from the Australian GP. With only 7 cars running at the finish, and most of them backmarkers, the results are a little off. If they can avoid another incident that takes out a large portion of the field, then Malaysia should give a much clearer picture of who Ferrari will be challenged by and who will be fighting for fourth on down - Jeff S - United States
