McLaren's domination appears to be slipping away. From a purely historical point of view, the McLaren team since 1998 had the best cars in terms of performance. In 98 they qualified on pole for the first 9 races of the season, in 99 they were on pole for the first 5 races of the season, in 2000 they were on pole for the first 3 races of the season. Each of those years Ferrari played catch-up.
This year however, they have yet to manage a front row qualifying position let alone win pole. In Australia, David Coulthard qualified not only behind the 2 Ferrari's but also behind a Jordan and a Williams. In Malaysia, Ferrari, Williams, Jordan and BAR qualified in front of a McLaren. It appears that the team have concentrated on reliability rather than performance. This has left Ferrari alone in front while McLaren are battling with Williams, and the two Honda powered teams.

Can McLaren crawl their way back to challenge Ferrari or are we witnessing the beginning of McLaren's slide, after all, no one stays at the top forever. What do you think ? Have Your Say   (What others are saying)

What others are saying:

It would be wrong to write off McLaren, they had a slow start to the 2000 season as well, and it was a see-saw ride during the middle part of the season.  I am not a supporter of McLaren, but I don't think we have seen the end of them yet.
Sure, what if Ferrari (Schumi in particular) finished all the races of 2000?  It could have been a different scenario for McLaren, they might not have come close last season, but one never knows.
I do think that Ferrari has the better car (at last!), but beware of Williams BMW.  There is strong competition out there this season for both Ferrari and McLaren, but write off McLaren?
Dont think so! (Although it would be nice!) - Renette K - South Africa

With current specs., yes.

There is little doubt that Ferrari has a significant advantage and that the other teams are closer to McLaren.

With this said, the Spanish GP represents a different set of challenges and it is only then that we will be able to see the true picture.

Watching the Malaysian GP (the section after the restart where the Ferraris came through the field 3 or 4 times) there is no doubt in my mind that those cars do have some (legal) gadget that controls wheelspin. The reintroduction of TC, at the very least negates that advantage, for me McLaren are still the team to beat
- Dunder - Hong Kong.

McLaren will be back !  Take that to the bank !  The McLaren has been the best racing machine in the world since 97 and believe me, Ron Dennis and that entire team will prove it throughout the rest of the season.  Team McLaren will shine---it is simply a matter of time

Have they lost they're edge..?..for the moment it seams. I'm a big Ferrari fan and it does me good to see Ferrari doing so well...but also (as a Ferrari fan) our main concern is still McLaren...we watch every race and the first thing we ask is "where's the McLaren?" and with good reason to. Ron Dennis and (the other) 2 best drivers in F1... now with that combination...how long do you really think it'll take to sharpin that edge? So, in short, (to steal a great line from the movie) "what's behind me, doesn't concern me", doesn't hold true to the great fight Ferrari and McLaren are going to have - Jimmy - USA.

Judging on the first two races-i feel that mclaren have lost their edge slightly, yet the other teams have made up a hell of a lot of ground on them-other teams like williams and jordan and ferrari have made more technological advances, and got to grips with the new regulations as far as aerodynamics are concerned, whereas mclaren have not - Carl - England.

i am the biggest fan of the mclaren, and they are one of the most successful team of the formula 1. so, i have no doubt they will bounce back, it is only the matter of time. but i know it won't be long - Apichai - Thailand.

McLaren have not a good Test Driver in Wurz. I saw his times and they didn't convinced me at all.
About the car I think it has lots of problems especially the electronic system but it will get better when the races will be all held around Europe and it will be easier for the Mechanics to move from a place to another.
David Coulthard is proving he is not Hakkinen's shadow anymore and this year I think he will be the main problem for Ferrari.
I do not like either Ferrari or McLaren so if I would have to choose in Brazil I would let Ralf Schumacher win on the powerful BMW engine.
Jos Verstappen and the Arrows are in exceptional form for Brazil which is good news for me and for all the Arrows fans - Rob - Australia.

I'm a big McLaren fan and it really hurts to see them do so badly. They don't look very good at all. But I'm optimistic that they shall be able to catch up with Ferrari. Williams and other teams are enjoying the limelight , but that won't last long. One must not forget that Mika Hakkinen is a 2 time WORLD CHAMPION and a superb driver. Most people seem to forget that including the author of THE HERETIC. David Coulthard is also a superb driver and together they are a superb pair, one of the best Formula One has ever seen. Ron Dennis is a super team principal and he shall be able to work things out, I hope. As for Ferrari , Jean Todt is not the person who should be praised for their good performance, nor Michael Schumacher or Rubens Barrichello but Ross Brawn. He has one of the best technical minds in F!. So on the whole I think McLaren shall be able to do much better as the season progresses - Yaman - India
