With Johnny Herbert leaving Formula 1 at the end of the year, a seat at Jaguar is vacant and waiting to be filled. Several drivers are competing for the seat including Dario Franchitti (drives in the CART series), Tomas Scheckter (drives in the F3000 series) and Luciano Burti (Jaguar test driver).

Dario Franchitti who was runner up last year in the CART championship by the closest of margins wants to compete in Formula 1 and could renew his rivalry with Juan Pablo Montoya (expected to move to Williams) in F1!

Tomas Scheckter is the son of Jody Scheckter, the last Ferrari world champion. He recently drove the R1 and claimed that he is ready to step into F1 and hopes to be driving the Jaguar next year.

And there is Luciano Burti who has been testing for Jaguar this season and also wants to drive for Jaguar next year. Burti was impressive in Austria when he had to replace Eddie Irvine on the Saturday preceding the race. While he only managed to qualify in 21st position, he was just over 0.5 seconds slower than his teammate. He also went on to finish the race in 11th place.

Jaguar is a team that is clearly struggling this year. They have only scored 3 points so far and are not even competing with the mid runners. They could turn around next year but then they might not.

A difficult choice for the team and the drivers!

Who do you think should partner Eddie Irvine at Jaguar in 2001. Franchitti, Scheckter, Burti or someone else ?  (What others are saying)

What others are saying:

Burti, a very impressive first drive in Austria and must have some feeling for the car by now. A logical, but unfortunately inappropriate choice.

The team has disappointed the sponsors badly this year and needs a name as well as the points. Franchitti is well known in the States and Scheckter can leverage his first season off Jody. One of these will be the preferred option for the team. Whoever it is, they need to be able to push Irvine very quickly out of the No. 1 spot or Ford will have another year of miseries.

Of greater concern is the car itself. Where is the marketing value of the mighty Cat vying for last place ? Ford can afford one bad year but not two, with BMW and Honda walking tall in the midfield (and Toyota looming large) Ford must pull the Cat out of the bag and do something or the pussy may just prove a PR nightmare - Geoff H - Australia

Dario Franchitti.
Dario is fast, European and is also popular in America. It would be great to see him dice it out with the likes of Montoya and Villenueve, other great ex Champ Car drivers. The sponsors would love it - Robbie - Australia

I dont think it would be any else but Jean Alesi. If Alain Prost sells his team, Jean will look elsewhere. I think he will get the drive - Chris - Australia

I think that it should be Burti. Because he really impressed me in Austria. I think he deserves the seat - Hubert Z. - Malta
