As usual, your post race comments are well thought out and provocative. The
meditation on the change in pit strategy makes good sense; it also makes sense
that the Ferrari team would make the best use of such an opportunity. The Heretic replies: Hi Jim, Or should I say hopeful? Well, it worked! Who expected to see Button on the podium this early in the season? Not me. BAR’s new package was already impressive in Melbourne. Now what do you call it. Not only are they fast but also reliable. Massive progress. The Sauber wind tunnel was opened far too late to have any significant effect on the current car. With a little luck we should see positive results just from now on but it seems that the “suck and see” science of aerodynamics makes for slow progress. If Sauber are having ride height related problems due to an uneasy marriage between this year’s engine to last year’s gearbox it may take all of six months to finalise the whole package. But they must have got it seriously wrong to be this bad. It is hard to imagine that they have the same power as Ferrari. I am surprised that there seems to be such a huge discrepancy between drivers. Some, like Button, Kimi and Alonso seem so much better than others, like Coulthard and Heidfeld. I often wonder if it really is the driver that is not cutting it or something more fundamental. Maybe it is not so much skill but tactics and strategy that makes the difference. It could be something simple like the ability to focus. Whatever it is I doubt that it is related to the basic driving skill. Surely all drivers have that. Back to Top |
