With regard to this comment: "Spectators will lose
interest if, for instance, Michael Schumacher’s engine blows up on Saturday,
sidelining him for the rest of the weekend and the race." I would
disagree. I think spectators would like to see a race that is close and not
just a Ferrari winning every weekend. By having a chance that Schumacher will
be out for the main race would keep me more interested than if he was there.
Also this would be better for punters because the odds in F1 are so shit that
there is no point on betting on a Ferrari driver to win. The Heretic replies: Thank you Simon, It really does not matter which of the top drivers are side lined – if it happens too much my fear is that we will start losing the audience. If it is only Ferrari/Schumacher that gets sidelined it is possible that it would increase interest in the sport to see if he can claw his way back up.
