Yes, I think you are quite right with your summation on Michael controlling the race from the front. After all he was in the F2002 and not given much of a chance. I would think reliability was also at the back of his mind. By the way, look closely at the slow down lap just after turn 2 - what was that plume appearing at the back of F2002? Smoke or vapour?
Yes Michael drove with his head unlike JPM who seems to get his brain disconnected when the lights go green. I think JPM drives on maximum while MS drove on optimum.
As far as McLaren are concerned - I'm afraid it is a matter of "one swallow doesn't make a summer". They are way off pace (and reliability?)
Certainly Toyota are having a dream debut. Towards the end of last season, who on this earth placed them much higher than the Minardis' of last year - and here they are with 2 championship points. I wonder if one of the more established drivers wouldn't have given them a better season. How about somebody like Mika Hakkinen in a Toyota next year - or the year there after. That could prove to be interesting. Regards - Johan M - South Africa (Reference Heretic 4-07 - Was Michael trying ?)

The Heretic replies:

Hi Johan,

I like your comment that Michael drives on optimum while Montoya drives on maximum. It may have something to do with the way CART works. Just being in front is not worth much if the pace car comes out often so the only way to bank your lead is to lap.

Michael certainly did not give anything away after the race. He may have had a problem, he could have been nursing the car, but we will never know. I suspect that the Ferrari had some potential gremlins, otherwise why did they stick with the 2001 car?

Mika in a Toyota – now there is an idea. Yes there is no indication that McLaren are going to be competitive in the foreseeable future.
