Mar.22 (GMM) F1 teams are unhappy with the current safety car rules that can benefit or destroy a drivers' race.
Michael Schumacher this week commented that the rule, whereby the pitlane is automatically closed upon deployment of the safety car, should be changed.Toro Rosso rookie Sebastien Bourdais benefited greatly from the SC's deployment at Albert Park a week ago, but Rubens Barrichello was adversely affected, and Heikki Kovalainen robbed of a podium place.It is understood that the Bourdais situation, in particular, led some rival team managers to complain to race director Charlie Whiting in the pre-event briefing here at Sepang."I think the onus is on us to come up with something better," said McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh in Malaysia.Whitmarsh thinks the FIA was right to do something about the previous situation, where drivers raced at full speed upon deployment of the safety car in order to pit."But I think we've got to come up with something better and I think the FIA is open to that," he added.BMW's Mario Theissen agrees that "nobody" in formula one is happy with the current rules."There are discussions between Charlie and the team managers," he revealed. "Let's see what the outcome is."
