Africa
Round 3 where 20 teams competed in 5 groups for a place
in the finals. The 5 Group winners qualified.
The 20 teams are:
Gabon, Togo, Morocco, Cameroon, Tunisia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt,
Zambia, Algeria, Rwanda, Ghana, Mali, Sudan, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina
Faso, Guinea, Malawi
Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Nigeria and Algeria have won their
groups
Asia
Australia, Japan and Korea Republic and Korea DPR have qualified
Bahrain won the playoff against
Saudi Arabia but lost to New Zealand for a place in the finals
Europe
53 teams competed in Round 1 in 9 groups. 8 Groups have 6 teams and
the 9th group has 5 teams. The 9 Group winners qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
The 8 best Group runners-up competed in the second round where they were split into pairs with the 4 winners qualifying.
The 53 teams are:
Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark,
England, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, FYR Macedonia, Georgia,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia,
Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands,
Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania,
Russia, San Marino, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, Wales
The Netherlands, Italy, Serbia, England, Spain, Germany, Denmark,
Switzerland, Slovakia, Portugal, France, Greece and Slovenia have qualified
North, Central America and the Caribbean
Round 4 where 6 teams competed in 1 group. The top 3
automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup while the 4th placed team played the 5th
placed team from South America for a place in the finals.
The 6 teams are:
USA, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago
The USA, Mexico and Honduras qualified. Costa Rica was 4th but lost
to Uruguay in the playoff
Oceania
New Zealand have won the Oceania group and beat Bahrain to qualify for a place in the 2010 World Cup
finals.
South America
10 teams competed in 1 group to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The
top 4 teams qualify while the 5th placed team plays against the 4th placed
team from the North, Central America and the Caribbean group for a place in
the finals.
The 10 teams are:
Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela,
Bolivia, Peru
Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina have qualified. Uruguay also
qualified and beating Costa Rica in the playoff
