Should Alexander Wurz quit Formula 1 ?

In 1997 when Alexander Wurz replaced Gerhard Berger in 3 races while Berger recovered from a sinus operation, Alexander Wurz scored his first and only podium finish in just his 3rd race. People thought of him as the next Niki Lauda.
That impressive result made Benetton sign him for the following year as Berger retired. While he didn't finish on the podium in 98, he did score 17 points and finished 8th in the driver's championship 1 point ahead of his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella. In 99 he only managed to score 3 points out of 16 races while Fisichella scored 13. This year after 10 races he is still scoreless while Fisichella has scored 18 points.
The Benetton management are disappointed with Alexander's performance and have given the strongest sign that he could be replaced soon following another bad result at the Austrian GP.

Will Benetton replace Wurz with Pizzonia in Germany ? Should Wurz move to another team ? or should he quit Formula 1 ? What do you think ?  (What others are saying)

What others are saying:

Wurz out and Mark Webber in. I honestly think that Webber's F3000 experience and impressive testing times will be of greater benefit than the arrival of Jenson Button - Paul K. - Australia

I just wanted to reply to Nicki - Canada comments
Schumacher won in a Benetton but its not the same car Wurz drives.  He left Benetton and took every one who makes the car to Ferrari. But watch this space, you may well see Schumacher back at Benetton with his people.  Now that Renault are coming and Flavio is there. That team will be competitive.  I think Benetton should have kept Wurz but obviously the management and Wurz are not getting along and are unsettling - Daniel - Australia

Wurz now puts pillows in the cockpit cause he gets sore backs, I thought they were there so he can sleep during a race - Chris - Australia

Wurz needs to leave. Look at Fisi he has the same car. Flavio doesn't like Wurz - Boomer - Australia

In formula 1 drivers usually only get one crack at a decent drive. Wurz made a great impression when he broke into F1, but obviously his performances this season have been terrible. This is quite possibly the fault of the Benetton car, which it has been claimed is not to his liking, and also the team who have been very critical of Wurz.
I think he has blown his chances and should try his hand at CART,perhaps if he can rediscover his confidence he can try again in a few years (like Zanardi!). It would be interesting to see what he could achieve in different circumstances - Bobby H - Ireland

I just wanted to reply to Daniel A in Brazil.
Michael Schumacher won a World Championship in the car that Wurz drives - Nicki - Canada

no, he should instead move to a more prosperous team - Oli - England.

NO! Alex should NOT quit. Wurz is a damn good and competitive driver...he can be very dominating but only if-:
1) He gets a good car.
2)Benetton really pulls its socks up.
No way he should quit - Gladiator - India.

I think he should not quit F1. What I think he should do is to try and drive the way he did back in '97. The guy is young and he does not have a lot of experience.
Another reason of why I don't think he should quit, is the non-competitive way of which the F1 cars are being built. In other words, I don't think Michael Schumacher would be doing a whole lot better job than Wurz, if he were driving the same car! - Daniel A - Brazil.

No way Wurz should quit! Last year when the team was performing quit well at that time people said he is a good driver, right? Now please don't blame Wurz for the poor performance of the team... Given a good car and a team under ... he can perform very well - Tushar G - India.

Yes, but not now. Is not fair for Alexander & is not right for Benetton too. Poor performances are on both sides, and failure technical or human are normal. Perhaps Renault can take that decision from outside. Hopefully, Alex can resurrect with a good technical foundation - Marian - Romanian lining in the USA.

I think that Wurz hasn't been racing long but he is the last best in the field!!. Fisichella is the greatest thing that ever happened to Formula One and he is the Best. If anyone should go to Ferrari it should be Fisco and Wurz should go away - Fisco's Biggest NZ fan - New Zealand
