What others are saying:
I am writing in response to Arthur W. from the US. Oh my
god How can somebody be so ignorant!! Williams only for the Britts. Ok How about Ferrari
then ...
Oh yeah let's kick Schumi out and lets bring the Italians only. Sorry Mika your country
has no team so see you later.
Come on what's in you brain...methanol? - Beth - USA
Montoya's mind set will make him the dominant driver also
in F1. Few drivers can focus the way Montoya does.He will not be distracted with mundane
cheap talk. His focus is to beat everybody in the circuit, he is color blind doesn't see
the color of the car in front of him he just has to beat him Others lose focus when they
realize oh that's Schumi or Mika.
At a race in the CART circuit this year the TV braodcasting company made a comparison
between the hands movement of Montoya and Blundell (former F1). And for that they split
the screen in two. Montoya's hand movement has no equal.
F1 is the big winner with guys like Schumacher, Mika, Button and now Montoya you'll see, I
just hope M Andretti would return - Louis G - USA
You have got to be kidding!! Jenson seems to be just
finding his feet, out qualifying his team mate several times 5th on the grid at Japan. On
a track he hasn't raced before!
I think Frank Williams has rocks in his head -
Peter - Australia
I just hope Jensons team next year is competitve, He has
done so well in his first year Montoya is an exceptional pilot, he has the courage and the
experience to be a F1 champion, Williams needs a pilot like him there is no other -
Oscar D. - Spain
Montoya has shown to be the best pilot of the world -
Fernando - Canada
I am completely convinced that Montoya should go to F1, and
if Williams is trying so hard to get him to race for them it must be because he has the
talent required. Every pilot is different and if others have failed at their attempt to
make it in F1, that doesn't mean that Montoya will fail too, he has enough experience,
plus he raced in many of the F1 tracks when he was in F3. Apart from being a record
breaker, Montoya responds when racing head to head with any driver, and has the nerves
required when making any moves. And to see who are the many comparing him to Schumacher,
Senna or Prost any of you out there can simply check out any driving magazine or web site
and there you will find anything you want to know - Connie B. - Colombia
Montoya would be dynamite in an F1 car. People have short
memories, Montoya is NOT just another South American driver, he won the European F3000
championship and was the Williams F1 Test driver in 1998. Montoya knows most of the tracks
and current F1 cars well, why wouldn't Sir Frank want him back. Montoya has great car
control he knows how to get the best out of the car no matter what the situation. Button
is doing well but clearly does not have anywhere near the same racing pedigree, he has a
lot to learn.
I am a mad F1 fan but also follow the CART series as it is a lot more competitive, sad to
admit but true.
Button should be grateful to Williams for the opportunity
given him, he will be in F1 in 2001 but not at Williams. Top drives should be reserved for
top drivers and Montoya is certainly one of those.
Michael Andretti was not an F1 failure. He made the move to
F1 at the wrong time when honda pulled out and McLaren were left with customer Ford
engines. (Thanks to Andretti or else they would have been worse off!!) F1 cars at the time
were also fully computerised with active suspension, traction control and ABS (not
permitted in CART). Michael was always going to struggle and don't forget he had The Great
Ayrton Senna as his team mate. He was also living in the US and travelling to all races
from there, not the ideal way to mount a championship challenge. Towards the end of the
season Michael was starting to improve and finished on the the Podium (3rd) in Monza
(would have finished higher up the order if not advised by team to protect Senna, who had
mechanical problems, nursing a second place finish. ( I wish critics would get there facts
straight before firing away with ill informed comments.) - Robbie - Australia.
Frank Williams must be getting desperate for drivers having
to steal from CART. I know a number of drivers which would do good, could you imagine what
Mika Salo could do in a Williams. Montoya to Williams no way look at Zanardi he didn't
score a point and he has an F1 past. Montoya would choke - Boomer - Australia.
"in my dreams" -? come on over Montoya, Frank is
waiting!! and here Jenson ... sign on this line, and you'll now be driving a Ferrari ...
and please be careful as u lap Montoya in his Williams - Jimmy M - USA
I think that Williams should take the opportunity to get
Juan Montoya while they can. All the people who use last year's example of Alex Zanardi
should note that he was one of the oldest drivers in the championship (I think only Alesi
and Hill were older). Jacques Villeneuve made a very successful transition to F1 after his
championship winning year in America by actually taking pole position and nearly winning
his first race in Melbourne. Montoya is in a similar situation from what I can see and in
my opinion, Williams must take up their option on him without delay - Adam B. -
Australia.
Button is doing extremely well, for a rookie, as compared
to some of the veterans. Give him some time, and he could be challenging for the
championship. He should stay - J W. - Singapore.
I believe that Montoya has what it takes to be a
competitive F1 driver, Jenson has been doing a great job and to see him replaced by
Montoya I think is a little unfair. It is great to see a young guy doing so well
- Peter H. - Australia.
No way! It will be fantastic to see Montoya drive in F1,
but not a Z class team like Williams - Fernando D. - USA.
Williams are British, Jenson Button is British and it is he
who should continue to drive for Wiiliams. I definitely do NOT want to see a Colombian
driving a British car.
Apart from this Button has shown tremendous maturity and skill in his first year driving
on circuits which he had never seen before. This is more than could be said of Ralf
Schumacher who, from memory, did not even finish a race in his first year. If anyone
should go to allow the Colombian into the team it should be the German and not the
Englishman!
Has Frank Williams no national pride? - Arthur W. - USA.
Yes, Montoya should drive F1. As for Button, every F1
driver that has gone to CART, Fittipaldi, Mansell, Blundell, etc. have said the atmosphere
is much more friendly than F1. Competing drivers share information and help each
other. Button could gain a lot from that. Remember, the last time the two
circuses raced on the same track, Detroit, the CART pole sitter would have started 5th on
the F1 grid. The two series aren't that far apart. CART cars are heavier and
more forgiving than F1 cars and I believe Button could use the time in the saddle where he
can make some mistakes and get away with it. He's a great driver and sure to return
to F1.
I take exception to your remark that Michael Andretti was a failure at F1. If memory
serves me correctly, he had at least one podium finish and challenged for the lead several
times before quitting F1. That's more than most F1 drivers accomplish in a career
- Carlton H. - USA.
No.. but with Frank Williams it will probably happen.
Who are the "MANY" that think Montoya is in the same league as Michael
Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Answer.. Chip Ganassi and Frank Williams.
How can you be in the same league when you're not driving in the same league?
Alex Zanardi was a great driver in CART. BUT.. The competition isn't even close to
F1.
I wish I had a dollar for every future "Babe Ruth" who came up to the Majors for
a cup of coffee - Bill K. - USA.
Look how good Zanardi looked in CART, and look where he
ended up! I don't entirely blame Zanardi for his lack of success in F1, but if Montoya
does go to F1, it will be with the same expectations and same team that Zanardi went to.
Jenson, I think is doing well for a rookie. It's a bit unfair to be compared to Ralf, as I
believe he is at least as good as his brother if not better. I wouldn't be surprised if
Sir Frank axed Jenson, looking at his record of axing drivers, it's a wonder he never
learns when to hold on to a good thing! - Steven C. - Malta.
I think that Frank Williams has very little to lose in
swooping for Montoya. He has Button under long term contract and if Montoya goes the way of
Zanardi and Andretti he can recall Button from a loan spell at a team like Jaguar or
Jordan.I heard Montoya has been linked to newcomers Toyota so if Williams doesn't
move now he may miss out - Robert H. - Ireland.
Montoya doesn't have the feel for Formula one. He is fast
but I can't see him in Monaco, in the rain at Silverstone or in dusty Hungaroring. No
offense but only a small number of American drivers can survive in the Formula One
dogfight. Button on the other hand has the feeling of speed and guts to pass, which is
great but needs some credit. In reverse I guess Mika will be a champion in CART & Indy
here in the USA with one condition; to qualify first. I hope Sir Frank Williams will keep
Jenson. I m a Ferrari nut (used to work for them for 9 years) and Barrichello is one of
the few American (South or North) drivers with success in Formula One. The other one was
Andretti - Marian G. - Romanian living in the USA.
I believe Montoya has the ability to drive F-1.
I don't care for Indy car racing I would enjoy seeing him take on the challenge!
If Button is replaced, he's young and will hook up with another team. Even if it's only
testing he will eventually get another chance if he perseveres! - Victor D. - USA.
I think Montoya should replace Button. I believe that
it's the next logical step in Montoya's racing career as he has proven that he can
dominate the CART circuit. Granted it's not over a full racing career such as an
Unser, Andretti, Rahal or Mears, but for all practical purposes he's the dominant player
on that circuit. I think it's also the logical step for Williams. Obviously,
Sir Frank Williams is a major admirer of Montoya and with good reason. He's head and
shoulders above Button. While Button is a good driver and I believe that he has a
solid future in F1, it's about winning now and in the future. BMW didn't sign on to
produce engines for a rookie who is seeing many of the circuits for the first time, so,
I'm sure they would love to have a Montoya and Schumacher tandem - Mike - USA.
