Hi Heretic,
NewsOnF1 continue to do a brilliant job!! I really enjoy being able to join you for the practice and qualifying sessions as that is the only way we can get such great coverage of the action in REAL TIME!! Lotsa work but well done and thanks. What a race at Barcelona!! Had to stir up the followers a bit with some reflections and some questions. 1) MS shows again his brilliant team work and the effect of good race strategy - know your capability, slow down and instead of 6 you finish up with 10 points. EXCELLENT drive for Michael. 2) JPM? It becomes apparent that as long as Williams can keep his car together, he will be able to get on to the podium. Amazing reflexes and car control but seeming very hard on the car. Maybe podium-or-bust is not too bad a strategy. Have to admit that whether I like him or not, he sure has shown up the fact that a lot of the "not able to overtake in F1" stems from "familiar wimpishness"? 3) JV well done!! Showed up the Jordan's at last but overall BAR still have a way to go. 4) JT represented Jordan well! One has to wonder what would have happened if his team mate had not got a little too enthusiastic?? 5) DC. I really do believe that if he keeps it up he can be 2001 champion. Points in every race so far and sheer determination from the rear of the grid for two points here. All he needs is Ron (and God or similar) on his side. Mika placing himself between DC and Michael would also add up to a certain thing. 6) NH. Well believe it or not, Nick is my favourite driver on the grid at the moment. Quiet, gets on with the job and even managed to get the Prost to the end of a few races when Alesi did not try to pull rank on him last season. This season he and Kimi (my number two favourite) are having a LOT of fun with a heap of credit to the Sauber organisation for excellent taste. And what a handy chassis to go with it all!!!
Wherever) MH? Mika, 'fraid MS really
has the edge on you - get the EASY board, overtake JPM (just to show
it can be done) and instead of 10 we get 0 points. Wonder if the McLaren
would have made it to the end if Mika had settled for a few seconds
ahead of Michael rather than steaming off to a Mika clockwork finish?
But I do still feel for him!! Last one I saw that close was
Nigel Mansell in Adelaide.
Regarding the cars?? Ferrari's continuing reservations and "controlled" nervousness is because all of the cars are now right on THE VERY EDGE of their technical ability and thus reliability. It has been stated in print that the F1 motors (for example) are only good for about 600km. May I suggest that this is now as low as , say, 65 laps of Barcelona!!! Unfortunately sometimes only 64. (Or was it 50 for Jaguar? Poor old (new?) Jaguar!!) Oh yeah. There seemed to be some pretty bad examples of the new Traction Control features being demonstrated. <grin> One thing for absolutely sure, F1 fans are in for a fantastically entertaining year with the "new drivers" all scaring the pants off the "old hands" to make it all even more entertaining at all levels in the field. All the way from 1 to 22. Very best regards to all the sophisticated petrol heads - Ian M, Sydney The Heretic replies: At times I have wondered if CART cars are more robust than F1 cars, because I get the feeling that Villeneuve and Montoya are hard on their cars. He certainly managed to get past some – especially at the start. Frentzen
worries me. At times he drives too conservatively and the he suddenly
decides to throw caution to the wind for a lap or two. Coulthard
is far better at adopting a new car than Hakkinen and this alone will get
him too far ahead for Hakkinen to catch up. I wonder how long the McLaren
will be able to run up front? Hakkinen/McLaren
claim that his problems were all due to clutch failure – I am not sure
that I wear it. Traction control has changed everything again. When the dust settles the teams will be scrambled again. Back to Top |
